How To Improve Personal Hygiene Starting Today

As you can see personal hygiene is an important part of our daily lives. Not only will it lower the chances of infection, but improves the overall quality of life. In order to get the most out of life, it is important to follow these basic hygiene habits.

Shower Regularly

It is so important to bathe or shower on a regular basis to get clean and refreshed. While you may not have to do it every day, make sure you keep up with your body. Some people only need to wash their hair and bodies every other day, while some have to shower daily.

Our bodies are constantly changing and shedding skin. In fact, recent research showed we shed about .072 ounces per day or a whopping 1.6 pounds a year! Showering helps to remove that dead skin from our bodies. Letting the dead skin build up can cause odor issues and illness.

Fingers and Toes

The hygiene of feet and hands must not be overlooked. It is so important to take care of your nails. In doing so will prevent problems such as hangnails and infected nail beds. Proper hand and foot washing are a must to prevent bacterial growth.

Teeth and Mouth

Brushing and flossing our teeth every day is important for good teeth, gums, and breath. However, it can also help keep your heart in good shape as well. Research has shown that poor dental hygiene can lead to serious heart valve conditions. Teeth should be brushed and flossed after every meal. However, if that is not a possibility at least twice a day.

In addition to brushing and flossing, a person should make every effort to go to the dentist at least every six months. During these visits the dentist will examine your teeth and give a thorough cleaning.

Proper Hand Washing

Of all the parts of our bodies, the hands are probably the most important to keep clean. Our hands come into direct contact with more bacteria, viruses, and dirt than any other part of our bodies. Our hands also come into direct contact with our eyes and mouth.

Making sure to thoroughly wash hands before prepping and eating food is very important. It is the first line of defense in killing harmful bacteria. In addition, one should also wash their hands after using the restroom, handling garbage, or coughing. While on the go it is wise to keep an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with you.

Sleep Tight and Don’t Let The Bed Bugs Bite

With many of us having such busy lives, we forget the importance of a good night’s sleep. In order for our bodies and minds to be a peak performance, we need at least 8-10 hours of sleep per night. Without adequate rest, our bodies become run down and our immune system does not function at an optimal rate.

When To Step In

If you have a friend or family member suffering from poor hygiene it is important to say something to them. Before outright confronting someone on bad hygiene, try to get to the root of the problem first. Generally, neglect comes from depression or sadness.

Find out what is causing the depression and see if you can help. You need to let them know the dangers of bad hygiene and what it can do to them. Be frank with your talk but understanding as well. The goal is not to make them feel worse about themselves. If the situation does not improve you may need to suggest a counselor or physician.

Most of us have no issues with personal hygiene, it is just a part of our lives. We wake up tp a specific routine and keep to it. Shower, brush the hair, brush the teeth, deodorant, etc. However, there are people who simply get lost and need to find their way back.
